In a momentous decision, the Government of Mauritius has announced a one-off special leave of two hours for public servants of the Hindu faith on January 22, 2024. This exceptional leave has been granted to allow Hindu public servants in Mauritius to participate in prayers commemorating the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The Pran Pratishtha ceremony at the Ram Temple will witness the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other distinguished leaders, with the event being broadcasted live. In a recent statement, the Mauritian Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, expressed, “Cabinet has agreed to the grant of a one-off special leave of two hours on Monday, January 22, 2024, from 1400 hours to public officers of Hindu faith, subject to exigencies of service, in the context of the inauguration of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir in India, which is a landmark event as it symbolizes the return of Lord Ram in Ayodhya.”

The roots of Hinduism in Mauritius trace back to the era when Indian migrants, brought as indentured labor to colonial French territories and later to British plantations in Mauritius and neighboring Indian Ocean islands, introduced the faith

Mauritius, situated in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa, stands out as the only country on the African continent where Hinduism is the predominant religion. Globally, it ranks third in the prevalence of Hinduism as a percentage of the total population, following Nepal and India.

The roots of Hinduism in Mauritius trace back to the era when Indian migrants, brought as indentured labor to colonial French territories and later to British plantations in Mauritius and neighboring Indian Ocean islands, introduced the faith. These migrants hailed primarily from regions such as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. The special leave granted for the Ram Temple inauguration underscores the significance of this cultural and religious event for the Hindu community in Mauritius.
