State Department alumni Vivek Chilukuri is joining the Center for New American Security (CNAS) as a senior fellow and director of the technology and national security program. The post was held previously by a senior staff member in various roles for Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), reported americankahani.com.

In a statement, Richard Fontaine, CEO of CNAS said Chilukuri’s “impressive background as a trusted policy expert, both on Capitol Hill and in the State Department, will help advance the CNAS mission of developing bipartisan policies to sustain US technology leadership”.

The CNAS Technology and National Security Program “explores policy challenges associated with emerging technologies and seeks to provide cutting-edge research on various topics,” according to its website. It focuses on “bringing together the technology and policy communities to better understand these challenges and together develop solutions”.

Before joining CNAS, Chilukuri served as a senior staff member for Senator Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. His staff positions included senior policy advisor for technology and democracy, deputy chief of staff, legislative director, and chief speechwriter. During his tenure, Chilikuri “played an integral role in crafting legislation to strengthen America’s technology competitiveness, promote responsible governance for digital platforms and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, and expand access to high-speed broadband through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law”, his CNAS profile says.

He also served in the Department of State as a policy advisor to the undersecretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights. Additionally, he worked as a program officer on the Middle East and North Africa team at the National Democratic Institute.
