Zoho Corporation CEO Sridhar Vembu has raised concerns about the increasing number of Indian-American professionals leaving engineering and technology careers to join high finance, mirroring a long-standing trend in the broader American workforce, reported gujaratsamachar.com.
Vembu Urges Focus on Engineering and Societal Problems
Vembu took to social media on Tuesday, highlighting that many smart Indian-American children of tech and engineering professionals are now choosing careers in finance instead.
He recalled a personal experience from 1994, when he graduated with a PhD from Princeton. A former engineer who had shifted to Wall Street tried to recruit him for a quantitative trading role, but Vembu chose a lower-paying engineering job at Qualcomm instead.
“I did not find the idea of making money on money appealing—probably due to my father’s childhood admonition,” he shared
“This Is Not Good for Society”
Expressing concern over this trend, Vembu stated, “This is not good.”
He urged young talent to focus on solving real-world problems in engineering, technology, urban and rural infrastructure, and healthcare, instead of being drawn to finance.
“Making money on money feels easy, but a finance-driven economy would destroy society. This is ancient wisdom, and we must pay heed,” he concluded.
