Over 650 eminent Indians, including former judges, bureaucrats, and ambassadors, have signed an open letter addressed to the people of Bangladesh, urging them to prioritize peace and friendship between the two countries. The letter, spearheaded by former Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi, calls for an immediate end to attacks on minorities, their properties, and business establishments, stressing that such actions threaten the long-standing relationship between India and Bangladesh, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

India’s Concern Over Deteriorating Situation in Bangladesh. The letter expresses alarm over the current chaotic situation in Bangladesh, where mob rule and enforced resignations have disrupted normal governance in the country.

The signatories expressed their deep concern over the ongoing violence against minorities in Bangladesh, including Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, and other religious groups. The signatories emphasized that the situation not only affects the humanitarian aspect but also poses a risk of spilling across borders, potentially causing communal tensions and law and order issues in India.

The 685 signatories include prominent figures such as 19 retired judges, 34 former ambassadors, and 300 academicians, alongside 139 former bureaucrats, 192 retired armed forces officers, and 35 members of civil society. The letter also highlights the positive aspects of India-Bangladesh relations, including the resolution of key bilateral issues like land and maritime borders and the collaboration in sectors such as power, connectivity, and infrastructure development.

  • The letter calls for restoration of democracy and secularism in Bangladesh

  • The letter concludes with a hopeful message, urging the people of both nations to continue their journey of peace, friendship, and mutual understanding that has defined India-Bangladesh relations for over five decades

The letter urges all individuals and institutions in Bangladesh to restore democracy, secularism, and the rights of minorities, including Hindus. It emphasizes that the ongoing crisis can only be resolved through free, fair, and inclusive elections. The signatories further called for an immediate end to the coercion of minorities and for restoring peace and stability in the region.
