Australia has announced reforms in its Migration policy to bring in people better suited for the Australian economy, Hindustan Times reports.

“Our migration system … is broken. It is failing our businesses; it is failing migrants themselves. And most importantly, it is failing Australians. That cannot continue,” home affairs minister Clare O’Neil said. To attract more skilled migrants, Australia will introduce a system similar to those used by Canada and Germany. The government also pledged to make the visa process for high-skilled professionals quicker and easier, and to take steps to retain international students.

Temporary skilled visa holders who have been denied the chance to apply for permanent residency will be able to do so by the end of 2023. In September 2022, Australia raised its intake of permanent migrants to 195,000, an increase of 35,000, in response to widespread staff shortages experienced by businesses.
