Delhi Police have uncovered a major food fraud operation involving expired international food products being sold to high-end Indian stores and online platforms. Authorities arrested seven individuals in connection with the racket, which targeted popular brands imported from the UK, US, and Dubai.

According to the Delhi Police Crime Branch, the accused illegally imported expired items, repackaged them, and sold them at premium stores such as Modern Bazaar and Nature’s Basket, as well as through e-commerce platforms. The operation involved a wide range of well-known brands, including Oreo, Lipton, Ritz, Kelloggs, Fanta, Starbucks, Nescafe, Heinz, Hellmans, Kikkoman, Kewpie, Lindt, Nutella, Cadbury, Pringles, and Lays.

  • During the investigation, police seized a massive quantity of expired products

  • This included 43,762 kilograms of food items, 14,665 litres of beverages, 6,047 kilograms of candies, biscuits, and wafers, and 23,050 kilograms of sauces, vinegars, and other condiments. The total estimated value of the seized goods was around Rs 4.3 crore

Officials emphasized that the illegal sale of expired products posed a significant public health risk. Among the confiscated items were baby food products and other consumables, raising serious safety concerns. Police have warned consumers to be cautious and verify the authenticity and expiry dates of imported products, especially those sold at premium outlets or online.

The accused reportedly acquired the expired goods at minimal prices, repackaged them to hide their expiry status, and sold them as fresh products. Investigators are continuing to track the network’s supply chain to identify further violations and prevent similar fraud in the future.

This case has highlighted vulnerabilities in the import and retail system for international food brands in India. Authorities are now reviewing regulatory mechanisms to ensure stricter checks on expiry dates, product labeling, and storage conditions.
