Hyderabad: Despite backward facilities at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad, including a manual scoreboard in this day and age as seen in the opening Pakistan-Sri Lanka encounter, what has brought some cheer to fans who still chose to buy tickets for the New Zealand Vs Netherlands match is the presence of two Indian origin players in the Netherlands team, a special report by Reshmi AR in the Deccan Chronicle, says.
They are a Telugu: Teja Nidamanuru, born in Vijayawada and a Punjabi Vikramjit Singh. On the other side in the New Zealand team, there’s Rachin Ravindra, whose parents hail from Bengaluru. And these players seem to have breathed life into the game and the crowd.
And the smashing century by New Zealand’s 23-year-old Rachin Ravindra on debut at Ahmedabad against England is worth mentioning here along with Devon Conway, in what has been a breathtaking entry onto the big stage
Their presence has certainly perked up the dampened spirits of the local cricket fans as well as the HCA (Hyderabad Crocket Association). And it’s not just because of the poor facilities, that too coming from one of the richest sports bodies in the world.
Response to these World Cup matches in Hyderabad over the last few days has been lukewarm, understandably so. That’s because not a single India match will be played here this World Cup.
However, every time one of these players comes out to bat, the response from the crowd was mind-blowing breathing the much-needed life into the atmosphere. There were hoots and whistles for the player of Andhra origin, who received extra love from fans and commentators alike.
