Sanjay Kumar Verma explained that the decision was in response to the expulsion of one of India’s principal diplomats, emphasizing the tit-for-tat nature of the diplomatic row
Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, acknowledged in an interview with Canadian broadcaster CTV that the expulsion of Canadian diplomats was a “retaliatory” measure. He explained that the decision was in response to the expulsion of one of India’s principal diplomats, emphasizing the tit-for-tat nature of the diplomatic row.
The diplomatic dispute stemmed from a larger controversy surrounding the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s assertion of “credible allegations” implicating the Indian state in Nijjar’s murder escalated tensions. In response, the Narendra Modi administration threatened to strip Canadian diplomats of their diplomatic immunity, prompting Canada to recall dozens of embassy workers from India.

Verma highlighted the emotional aspect of the decision, stating that high emotions played a role in India’s response. He defended the downsizing of Canada’s diplomatic presence by pointing out the need for resemblance, noting that India had 13 diplomats in Canada compared to Canada’s 60-plus diplomats in India.
The High Commissioner emphasized that constructive conversations and dialogue had taken place between the two governments, leading to an improvement in the strained relationship. He expressed dissatisfaction with the premature conviction of India before the conclusion of an investigation, questioning the adherence to the rule of law. Verma interpreted requests for cooperation as a form of conviction, emphasizing a different perspective on the matter.
