Saurabh Anand suffered horrific injuries in Melbourne assault; police arrest four teen attackers
An Indian-origin man, Saurabh Anand (33), was left critically injured after a brutal machete attack by a group of teenagers in Melbourne, Australia. The incident took place on July 19 around 7:30 pm as Anand was returning home from a pharmacy at the Central Square Shopping Centre in Altona Meadows, reported gujaratsamachar.com.
According to The Australian Today, Anand was on a phone call when five teenagers surrounded him, with one rummaging through his pockets, another punching him repeatedly in the head, and a third attacker holding a machete to his throat. In a violent scuffle, Anand suffered three deep machete strikes to his arm, nearly severing his hand.
“While I was trying to protect myself, the machete just went through my wrist… then through my hand… then the bone,” Anand told The Age. He also sustained stab wounds to his shoulder and back, resulting in a fractured spine and broken bones.
Saurabh Anand’s hand was nearly severed in a machete attack by teenagers in Melbourne — doctors later reattached it in a complex surgery.
Despite his severe condition, Anand managed to walk away from the scene and call for help. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors initially considered amputation, but after a complicated surgical procedure, they successfully reattached his hand.
Authorities have arrested four of the five attackers, all teenagers, and launched a criminal investigation. The assault has sent shockwaves through the Indian community in Australia.
This incident follows another recent case involving Indian student Charanpreet Singh, who was racially abused and assaulted near Kintore Avenue during a separate confrontation.
