Indian-origin politicians shine in UK general election

Rishi Sunak: The incumbent Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, retained his seat in northern England, though his Conservative Party conceded defeat after Labour’s landslide win with 378 seats. Sunak expressed gratitude to his supporters on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging the hard work and dedication of Conservative candidates and volunteers. As the first British Asian Prime Minister, Sunak’s political career includes serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer and holding MP positions since 2015.

Preet Kaur Gill: Representing the Labour Party, Preet Kaur Gill was re-elected from Birmingham Edgbaston. Having previously served as the Shadow Minister for Primary Care and Public Health, Gill expressed her commitment to continue serving her constituents with dedication.

Priti Patel: Former Home Secretary Priti Patel retained her Witham seat in Essex, securing 37.2% of the vote. A prominent figure in the Conservative Party, Patel has been an MP since 2010 and served as Home Secretary from 2019 to 2022.

Gagan Mohindra: Gagan Mohindra, a Conservative Party member, was re-elected from South West Herts. Mohindra, whose family hails from Punjab, won with 16,458 votes. His background includes service in the British Indian Army through his paternal grandfather.

Kanishka Narayan: Kanishka Narayan of the Labour Party made history as Wales’ first MP from a minority ethnic background, defeating former Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns. Narayan’s journey from India to Cardiff, followed by an impressive academic and professional career, underscores his commitment to public service.

Navendu Mishra: Labour Party member Navendu Mishra secured re-election in the Stockport constituency, continuing his service since his initial victory in 2019. Mishra’s victory reinforces Labour’s strong presence in the region.

Lisa Nandy: Lisa Nandy, representing the Labour Party, retained her Wigan seat with a comfortable margin. Known for her work in race relations, Nandy has been an MP since 2010.

Suella Braverman: Conservative politician Suella Braverman won seats from Fareham and Waterlooville. Despite recent controversies, Braverman’s political career includes roles as Attorney General and chair of the European Research Group.

Shivani Raja: Shivani Raja claimed the Leicester East seat, previously held by the Labour Party. A Leicester native, Raja’s educational background and professional achievements highlight her dedication to her community.

Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi: Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, the first turbaned Sikh MP in British Parliament, was re-elected as MP from Slough, expressing gratitude to his supporters on X.

These victories highlight the significant contributions and growing influence of Indian-origin politicians in the UK’s political landscape.
