Through diplomatic negotiations and high-level interventions, 10,000 Indians have been freed from foreign jails

Since 2014, India’s diplomatic outreach under PM Modi’s leadership has been instrumental in ensuring the safe return of Indians from various countries
Notable examples of successful diplomatic engagements include the release of 2,783 Indian detainees from the UAE since 2022 and 850 prisoners freed from Saudi Arabia during Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman’s 2019 visit to India.
A landmark case was the release of Indian Navy veterans from Qatar in 2023, who had been sentenced to death but saw their sentences reduced after intense diplomatic negotiations. India’s engagement with Iran also resulted in the release of 77 Indian nationals in 2024 and 43 individuals, including 12 fishermen, in 2023. Furthermore, Bahrain pardoned 250 Indians in 2019 during PM Modi’s visit, while Kuwait released 22 Indians and reduced sentences for 97 others in 2017.
In addition to these successes, Sri Lanka released 3,697 Indian fishermen, and Pakistan freed 2,639 fishermen and 71 civilian prisoners as a result of India’s sustained diplomatic efforts. Officials attribute much of these successes to PM Modi’s personal rapport with international leaders.
