The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has disclosed troubling statistics about Indian women married to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) being abandoned in foreign countries. According to a written reply by Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, to Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu, 1,871 women have reported such cases.

These revelations underscore the pressing need for proactive measures to prevent such situations, including raising awareness and strengthening legal frameworks to safeguard the rights of Indian women married to NRIs

Dubai accounted for the highest number of cases, with 1,044 women seeking assistance from Indian missions. Other countries with significant figures include Singapore (256 cases), Doha (118), and the United States (112). Additional instances were reported in Australia (62 cases), the UK (57), and New Zealand (45).

To address the plight of these women, the MEA has implemented various measures, including counselling, legal guidance, and advice on procedural options. Minister Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting affected women through the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF), which provides financial and legal aid to mitigate their hardships.

These revelations underscore the pressing need for proactive measures to prevent such situations, including raising awareness and strengthening legal frameworks to safeguard the rights of Indian women married to NRIs.
