India’s flagship event to engage with the global Indian diaspora begins in Odisha with a focus on their contributions to a developed Bharat
The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention, organized by the Government of India in partnership with the State Government of Odisha, will take place from January 8 to 10, 2025, in Bhubaneswar. With the theme “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat,” the event will host Indian diaspora members from over 50 countries, offering a platform for interaction and recognition of their contributions.
Prime Minister Modi to inaugurate the event; a special Pravasi Bharatiya Express to be flagged off
The Convention will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 9, 2025. Christine Carla Kangaloo, President of Trinidad & Tobago, will address the gathering virtually as the Chief Guest. During the event, PM Modi will launch the Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a special tourist train under the Pravasi Teertha Darshan Yojana, facilitating a three-week journey to destinations of cultural and religious significance in India.
In addition, PM Modi will unveil four unique exhibitions:

Vishwaroop Ram – The Universal Legacy of Ramayana: Showcasing traditional and contemporary art forms of the Ramayana

Diaspora’s Contribution to Technology and Viksit Bharat: Celebrating the diaspora’s impact on global technological advancements

Spread and Evolution of Indian Diaspora: Highlighting the migration history from Mandvi, Gujarat, to Muscat, Oman

Heritage and Culture of Odisha: Displaying Odisha’s rich traditions, art, and cultural heritage
The Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on January 8 will feature Dr. Dev Pragad, CEO of Newsweek, as the Guest of Honour, with thematic plenary sessions exploring diaspora contributions in youth leadership, sustainability, women’s empowerment, and cultural connections.
Hon’ble Rashtrapatiji Smt. Droupadi Murmu will preside over the Valedictory Session on January 10, conferring the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards to selected members of the diaspora for their exceptional contributions.
The rich heritage of Odisha takes center stage for the first time in PBD’s history
This is the first time the PBD Convention is being held in Odisha, renowned for its cultural, spiritual, and historical significance. The 17th edition in 2023 was hosted in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
The entire event will be streamed live on the official PBD website and YouTube channel to enable wider participation and engagement.
