The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention (PBD) 2025 was hosted in partnership with the Government of Odisha in Bhubaneswar from January 8 to January 10. This marks the first time the PBD was held in Eastern India, aligning with the Government of India’s ‘Purvodaya’ initiative focused on the region’s development. Odisha’s historical maritime ties with Southeast Asia and its growing relevance in India’s ‘Act East Policy’ made it an ideal location. The event saw participation from delegates representing over 75 countries.

Youth Day and Business Opportunities Take Center Stage

The opening day, January 8, was dedicated to the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. Dr. Dev Pragad, CEO of Newsweek, was the Guest of Honor, addressing the theme “Beyond Barriers: Diaspora Youth Leadership in a Globalized World.” Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar chaired a joint business session showcasing Odisha’s economic and technological opportunities. Cultural performances capped the day, highlighting Odisha’s art and heritage.

Prime Minister Modi’s Vision for Viksit Bharat 2047

On January 9, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the convention, urging the diaspora to contribute to India’s vision for Viksit Bharat 2047. The Chief Guest, President of Trinidad and Tobago,  Christine Carla Kangaloo, delivered a virtual address celebrating her Indian heritage and highlighting India’s global contributions.

PM Modi also emphasized preserving diaspora history, promoting the ‘Chalo India’ tourism campaign, and strengthening ties through events like the Girmitiya Conference. Key exhibitions and the Pravasi Bharatiya Express were also launched.

Celebrating Diaspora Contributions and Women Leadership

Day two featured plenary sessions on migrant skills and sustainable development, led by Union Ministers. The gala performance “Celebration of Bharat” captivated the audience with its vibrant cultural display. The final day included sessions on women’s leadership and cultural connections, chaired by prominent ministers, reinforcing the diaspora’s vital role in India’s global standing.

Honoring Achievements and Closing on a High Note

The valedictory session, presided over by President Droupadi Murmu, honored 27 individuals with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards. She commended the diaspora’s achievements, particularly the contributions of women and youth, and highlighted the government’s efforts to support the Indian community worldwide. The convention concluded with a soulful santoor recital by Maestro  Abhay Rustum Sopori.
