A 26-year-old Indian worker from Jharkhand’s Giridih district was tragically killed in a crossfire between Saudi police and an extortion gang in Jeddah on October 16. The victim, identified as Vijay Kumar Mahato, had been employed as a tower line fitter in a private firm for the past nine months, reported gujaratsamachar.com.
“A bullet meant for someone else hit me… please help,” he told his wife before dying
According to reports, Mahato, who hailed from Dudhapania village under Dumri block, sent a desperate voice message to his wife moments before succumbing to his injuries. In the message, he said, “A bullet meant for someone else hit me… please help.”
- His wife, in shock, immediately contacted her in-laws, who initially believed Vijay was receiving treatment
- However, the company he worked for officially informed the family that he had died in the shootout
Efforts underway to bring his body back to India
The Jharkhand Labour Department has reached out to the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia to expedite the process of repatriating Mahato’s body. Authorities are coordinating with the Saudi government and the employer to ensure his remains are returned to his hometown in Giridih.
Vijay is survived by his wife and two young sons. His death has left his family devastated, highlighting the vulnerability of Indian migrant workers in the Gulf region who often face dangerous working conditions and limited safety support.
