Indian nationals freed from scam operations in Myanmar return home after a successful rescue mission
Nearly 300 Indian nationals were successfully repatriated on Monday after being rescued from scam centers in Myanmar. The individuals, primarily working in illegal online fraud hubs, were freed during a crackdown led by authorities targeting these centers, many of which were operated by Chinese groups, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
Rescue Efforts and Repatriation
The rescued Indians, including 266 men and 17 women, were transported from Myanmar to Thailand’s Mae Sot airport in seven buses, accompanied by three additional buses for their luggage.
The Indian government organized a C-17 transport aircraft to bring them back to India, with another batch of 257 nationals expected to return the following day
China’s Role in Dismantling the Scam Operations
These scam centers, primarily located in the lawless border regions of Myanmar, are part of a larger billion-dollar industry that exploits foreign workers, including romance scams, investment fraud, and other illegal activities.
Many workers, including the Indians, were lured into these jobs under false pretenses, only to find themselves trapped and subjected to abuse.
China, which has already repatriated over 2,000 of its nationals, has continued efforts to dismantle these centers, treating their repatriated citizens as criminal suspects, with many arriving in handcuffs.
