The 32nd meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) convened on December 5, 2024, in New Delhi. This key diplomatic forum serves as a platform for dialogue aimed at addressing border-related issues and fostering cooperation.

The Indian delegation was led by  Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary (East Asia), while the Chinese delegation was represented by  Hong Liang, Director General of the Boundary & Oceanic Affairs Department of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The discussions marked a positive step forward, with both sides affirming the successful implementation of the most recent disengagement agreement.

As part of the proceedings, the Chinese delegation leader met with India’s Foreign Secretary, further signaling the intent to strengthen bilateral relations through consistent dialogue

This agreement addressed lingering issues stemming from tensions that arose in 2020. The meeting also laid the groundwork for the upcoming talks between the Special Representatives of India and China, as decided by the two nations’ leaders during their October 2024 meeting in Kazan.

A review of the border situation underscored the lessons learned from the events of 2020, with both sides emphasizing the importance of avoiding their recurrence. Regular exchanges and interactions at diplomatic and military levels were highlighted as vital to maintaining peace and stability in border areas. Additionally, both delegations reaffirmed their commitment to effective border management in line with established bilateral agreements and protocols.
