The External Affairs Minister emphasised that evacuation efforts are carried out without discrimination, prioritising the safety and well-being of all Indian nationals regardless of their state of origin.
Keeping the safety and security of Indian nationals in mind, the Government of India has evacuated 5,945 Indians from conflict-affected countries in the Middle East over the past three years, the Centre informed Parliament on Friday.
In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the evacuations were carried out from Israel, Iran, Syria and Iraq under special operations launched in response to deteriorating security situations. These included Operation Ajay in Israel in 2023 and Operation Sindhu in Iran and Israel in 2025.
The External Affairs Minister clarified that there is currently no information indicating any imminent threat to Indian nationals in the Middle East or the need for fresh evacuation operations
The minister stated that 1,474 of the evacuated nationals belonged to Uttar Pradesh. He also highlighted a special humanitarian effort undertaken by the government in 2024, when the mortal remains of 45 Indian nationals who died in a tragic fire incident in Kuwait were airlifted back to India. Among them were three citizens from Uttar Pradesh.
Jaishankar said the government closely monitors evolving global situations, especially in the Middle East, and issues advisories urging Indian nationals to avoid non-essential travel, follow local safety guidelines and remain in contact with Indian missions through designated helplines.
“When required, evacuation operations are launched using a whole-of-government approach to ensure the safe return of stranded Indians,” he said.
During such operations, the government provides logistical assistance including safe accommodation, food, local and cross-border transportation, and special evacuation flights, all on a gratis basis, the minister added.
