ISRO-NASA building next-Gen US$1 billion satellite, says former ISRO chairman

Both agencies will be involved in mission design, instruments, payloads and the launch

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are jointly building a US$ 1 billion satellite with latest large reflectors, high antenna and otherequipment, for clear data transmission, a report in The Hindu, agencies  says. 

“It is a unique mission where both agencies will be involved in mission design, instruments, payloads and the launch vehicle with the US agency pitching in most funds”, said former ISRO chairman A. S. Kiran Kumar on Wednesday, February 23.

The eagerly awaited ‘Human Space Mission Programme’ got delayed due to the pandemic and this project will give a big filip to the country’s development in the  matter of space exploration

Another report says that the ISRO-NASA joint mission NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite, aimed at making global measurement of land surface changes using advanced radar imaging, is proposed to be launched in early 2023, Earth Sciences Minister Jitendra Singh recently said In a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha.

The major scientific objectives of the mission are to improve understanding of the impact of climate change on Earth’s changing ecosystems, land and coastal processes, land deformations and cryosphere, he said.

It is a joint Earth-Observation mission between ISRO and US space agency NASA for global observations over all land masses including the Polar cryosphere and the India.

NISAR is one of the crucial collaborations of the ISRO and NASA. India and the US had agreed upon this mission during then President Barack Obama’s visit to India in 2015.
