Bharati Pawar, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, has sent a request to the civil aviation ministry to start a direct Nashik-Delhi commercial flight. At present, Nashik is connected to Delhi with a hopping flight via Ahmedabad.
Pawar, who is the BJP MP from Dindori in Nashik, told ToI that she had met Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Union Civil Aviation Minister and requested him to explore the possibilities of starting a direct flight between Nashik and Delhi.
“The direct flight will be a boon for the business community of entire north Maharashtra, frequent fliers and even give a boost to the tourism sector,” said Dr Pawar. Scindia had assured her to look into her request after seeking details from the ministry on aspects like traffic demand for the route.
Pawar has also requested Scindia to explore whether the Nashik airport could be developed as a cargo hub or not and also if night parking of the aircraft could be promoted at the facility
When the Udan scheme was started during the pre-Covid pandemic period, a private airline had started a direct flight between Nashik and Delhi and the response was encouraging. At present, apart from the flight that connects Nashik with Delhi via Ahmedabad, there are flights that connect Nashik with Pune and Belagavi. “During pre-Covid period, there was a good response from fliers availing the Nashik-Delhi direct flight. But post Covid, the situation has changed and hence the civil aviation ministry will need time to get the feedback before taking any firm decision,” added Pawar.
Pawar has also requested Scindia to explore whether the Nashik airport could be developed as a cargo hub or not and also if night parking of the aircraft could be promoted at the facility.
The Nashik airport is managed by the defence PSU, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which has invested to create infrastructure for passenger facilities at the airport.
