Oman: Over 268 freshers in Sohar get a taste of adventure, thrills at Oman Sailing Festival 2022

50 volunteers also joined Oman Sail representatives in removing litter from the beach and from the sea, helping to preserve the natural environment for future generations and native marine life.

Muscat – The first leg of the Oman Sailing Festival wrapped up in Sohar this weekend with more than 268 visitors trying their hand at sailing by taking part in free Try Sailing, Try Windsurfing and Try Kitesurfing sessions under the supervision of professional instructors from Oman Sail over the weekend of 6-8 October 2022.

Held at the Silver Jubilee Garden, 50 volunteers also joined Oman Sail representatives in removing litter from the beach and from the sea, helping to preserve the natural environment for future generations and native marine life. There was also an SME activation featuring [13] local businesses and craftspeople showcasing local products ranging from food, clothing and household items to souvenirs and traditional art.

Musab Al Balushi, Oman Sailing Festival Project Manager, said, “This was a great start to the Oman Sailing Festival 2022. We were very impressed with how many people took the opportunity to learn how to sail, windsurf and kitesurf. Oman has a long and storied maritime heritage, and these sessions help to introduce the next generation to the sport, allowing them to take on a new challenge or discover a new hobby.

“The Oman Sailing Festival will travel the length and breadth of the country to share the potential of sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing, and have a positive impact on the local environment by raising awareness of the need to care for the beaches and native wildlife our beautiful country is blessed with,” he added.

The next stop will be Mussanah from 12-14 October as part of the Arab Sailing Championships taking place at the same time at the Barceló Mussanah Resort with sessions in the RS Venture adaptable dinghy on offer.

From there, the festival moves to Al Mouj Muscat on 17 October to celebrate Omani Women’s Day, and Sur Al Hadeed in Seeb from 20-22 October.

The Oman Sailing Festival is proudly supported by the Barceló Resort Mussanah, Oman Air, National University of Science and (International Maritime College), National Mineral Water Company (Tanuf), and environmental partner the Environment Society of Oman.
