800,000 foreigners visited India for medical treatment
India has emerged as one of the world’s most cost-effective healthcare destinations, with the latest technology tools deployed, across care delivery.
This was stated by India’s Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh addressing a gathering at the recently concluded Healthcare Leaders’ Summit in Delhi.
Going by the statistics, India is fast emerging as affordable hospital of the world. In past three years more than 800,000 foreigners visited India for medical treatment.
About 825,000 medical visas were issued to foreigners, mostly in African nations, between 2019 and 2021, the Home Ministry sources said.
“A total of 410,677, 142,928 and 272,190 foreigners arrived on medical visas in 2019, 2020 and 2021 respectively,” said Nityanand Rai, Minister of State for Home.
India has almost 600 globally and nationally accredited hospitals and with vast health infrastructure, India is expected to reach a size of $50 billion by 2025, while the global medical tourism market is estimated to be worth about $72 billion
According to the Science and Technology Minister, the accredited hospitals have capacity to provide world-class treatment in a cost-effective manner. The country has almost 600 globally and nationally accredited hospitals and with vast health infrastructure, India is expected to reach a size of $50 billion by 2025, while the global medical tourism market is estimated to be worth about $72 billion.
“The share of India, already the world’s largest supplier of generic drugs, in medical tourism is expected to be around 10 billion dollars by 2023,” Singh said.
“Massive efforts are also on building a robust life sciences ecosystem through science and research, which will, in turn, reduce health inequalities and build a clear road map for the continuing successes of vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics,” he mentioned.
