In the last 12 months, Canada has experienced a significant influx of over 15,000 Indian tech professionals, marking a substantial shift in the country’s technology workforce landscape.
A recent joint report from The Technology Councils of North America (TECNA) and Canada’s Tech Network (CTN) highlighted that India comprised the largest contingent of tech industry workers who chose Canada as their destination between April 2022 and March 2023. This migration trend reflects the appeal of Canada’s immigration-friendly policies and its advantageous labor cost environment.
Among the approximately 32,000 tech workers who migrated to Canada during this period, 15,097 originated from India, followed by 1,808 from Nigeria. This trend is significantly attributed to Canada’s welcoming stance towards immigrants and its cost-effective labor market, as indicated by the report.
Professionals are relocating from major American cities such as Washington DC, Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia to Canada, further enriching the Canadian technology landscape
The city of Mississauga emerged as a prominent hub for these tech professionals, boasting nearly 1,000 IT companies and housing over 300,000 tech experts. Similarly, Montreal experienced a remarkable growth of around 31 percent in its tech ecosystem from 2015 to 2020, positioning it as another favored destination for tech talent.
The comprehensive report titled ‘Tech Workforce Trends: The Migration of Tech Workers and Tech Jobs Since the Pandemic’ shed light on the significance of this tech workforce migration. In the face of a worldwide shortage of skilled workers, the substantial migration of tech professionals to Canada not only addresses the urgent need for expertise but also paints a promising picture for the future of Canada’s tech industry.
The migration patterns revealed that during the period from April 2022 to March 2023, a total of 1,900 tech workers chose Mississauga as their new home, while Montreal welcomed 959 tech professionals from around the world.
While India, Nigeria, and Brazil largely contributed to the net influx of global tech talent, the report underscored another noteworthy aspect: the growing number of skilled professionals from the United States, including those of Indian origin. Notably, these professionals are relocating from major American cities such as Washington DC, Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia to Canada, further enriching the Canadian technology landscape.
