In a recent statement, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti highlighted the substantial contributions of Indian immigrants to the United States, emphasizing their pivotal role in shaping various sectors of American society. Referencing the evolution of a once-common jest about Indian CEOs, Garcetti remarked that the landscape has shifted dramatically. “The old joke was you could not become a CEO in the US if you are an Indian; now the joke is you cannot become a CEO in America if you are not Indian,” he noted, citing notable examples from tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Starbucks.

Garcetti underscored that more than one in ten CEOs of Fortune 500 companies are now Indian immigrants who pursued education and career opportunities in the United States. This statistic, he suggested, reflects the significant impact and influence of Indian professionals across diverse industries.

As the US continues to navigate a rapidly evolving global landscape, the collaboration and contributions of diverse immigrant communities remain integral to its economic vitality and cultural richness

Moreover, Garcetti emphasized the collaborative efforts between India and the US in harnessing technology for societal advancement. He described the relationship between the two nations as not merely additive but multiplicative, emphasizing the exponential growth potential when leveraging each other’s strengths. “There are no two nations on this globe who together can do this work better,” he asserted, highlighting the synergistic alignment of democratic values and technological innovation.

In line with Garcetti’s observations, a recent study conducted by economists Wendy Edelberg and Tara Watson from the Brookings Institution’s Hamilton Project affirmed the positive economic impact of new immigrants on the US workforce. The study found that over the past two years, immigrants have augmented the labor supply, facilitating job creation without fueling inflation or overheating the economy.

Garcetti’s remarks and the findings of the aforementioned study collectively underscore the significant contributions of immigrants, particularly Indian professionals, to the fabric of American society. As the US continues to navigate a rapidly evolving global landscape, the collaboration and contributions of diverse immigrant communities remain integral to its economic vitality and cultural richness.
