In a tragic maritime incident, the oil tanker Prestige Falcon capsized off the coast of Oman on Monday, resulting in the disappearance of 16 crew members, including 13 Indians. The Omani Maritime Security Center (MSC) reported that the vessel remains submerged and inverted near the port of Duqm, a significant industrial hub in Oman.

The Prestige Falcon was en route to the Yemeni port of Aden when it encountered difficulties and capsized. Initial reports suggest adverse weather conditions might have contributed to the incident. However, a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the capsizing.

Search and rescue operations were immediately launched by the Omani authorities, with support from various maritime agencies. Despite their efforts, there has been no confirmation on the stability of the vessel or the potential for oil leaks, raising concerns about environmental impacts.

The missing crew members include nationals from India, the Philippines, and other countries. The Indian Embassy in Muscat has been actively coordinating with Omani authorities to ensure all possible assistance is provided. “We are closely monitoring the situation and are in constant touch with local authorities to expedite the rescue operations,” an embassy spokesperson said.

This incident underscores the inherent risks in maritime operations and the importance of comprehensive safety protocols

Families of the missing crew members are in a state of distress, awaiting news about their loved ones. The shipping company operating the Prestige Falcon has expressed deep concern and is cooperating fully with the investigation. “Our thoughts are with the families of the missing crew. We are doing everything possible to assist in the search and rescue efforts,” a company representative stated.

The port of Duqm is a crucial location for Oman, housing major oil and gas projects. The incident has highlighted the need for stringent safety measures in maritime operations, especially in regions with significant industrial activity. Authorities are now assessing the potential impact on the port’s operations and the broader maritime sector.

Environmental groups have also voiced their concerns about the potential for oil spills. The MSC has assured that contingency plans are in place to address any environmental hazards that may arise from the capsizing. “We are prepared to respond swiftly to mitigate any environmental damage,” an MSC official said.
