Jaishankar reaffirms India’s commitment to Mauritius

His visit underscores the significance of the India-Mauritius relationship, reflecting India’s ‘Neighbourhood First Policy,’ Vision SAGAR, and commitment to the Global South

India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has reaffirmed India’s unwavering support for Mauritius in its ongoing journey towards progress and prosperity. During a two-day visit, Jaishankar engaged with the leadership of Mauritius to further strengthen the unique bilateral relations between the two nations.

Speaking at an event alongside Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, Jaishankar highlighted the deep-rooted and multifaceted partnership between India and Mauritius. He emphasized that the bilateral relationship serves as a model for India’s development collaborations globally.

According to the Indian High Commission in Mauritius, the close ties are largely due to historical, demographic, and cultural reasons, with nearly 70% of Mauritius’ 1.2 million population being of Indian origin

“India’s ties with Mauritius have flourished into a robust and comprehensive partnership,” Jaishankar remarked. “Our relationship is a testament to India’s successful development collaboration abroad.”

The visit included the inauguration of 12 High Impact Community Development Projects funded by India. Additionally, MoUs were exchanged in areas such as education, culture, digitization of immigration archives, and collaboration in space and innovation. Jaishankar and Jugnauth also distributed OCI cards to seventh-generation Indian-origin individuals in Mauritius, symbolizing the enduring cultural and historical connections between the two countries.
