India’s Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) delegation visited Oman on July 22nd and 23rd, 2024, and will continue to Bahrain on July 25th and 26th. The India-Oman Business-to-Business (B2B) Meet, organized by the Embassy of India, was held at the Sheraton Oman Hotel on Monday. The event saw the participation of 27 Indian companies from the agriculture and food sectors and over 30 Omani companies, focusing on Basmati rice, buffalo meat, poultry, and processed food.

The Indian delegation was led by Dr. Sudhanshu, Secretary of APEDA. Established by the Indian government under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act in 1985, APEDA aims to promote the export of agricultural and processed food products.

  • Bilateral trade between India and Oman has more than doubled, rising from USD 5.4 million in 2020-21 to USD 12.3 billion in 2022-23
  • The Indian Ambassador remarked that this figure does not capture the entire trade volume, as many Indian products enter the Omani market through other countries
  • He highlighted that a significant portion of this trade is in the agricultural sector, including grains, seasonal fruits, dairy products, poultry, and meat

The meet facilitated direct interactions between Indian exporters and Omani importers, emphasizing India’s strengths in rice, poultry, and agricultural products. One of the key developments discussed was the Halal Certification initiated by India’s Ministry of Commerce and Trade. Dr. Sudhanshu highlighted that the certification covers global halal standards, referencing the standards of all importing countries.

During the event, the Market Study Report on Food, Agriculture, and Marine Sectors, commissioned by the Embassy of India, was launched. Amit Narang, Ambassador of India to Oman, expressed confidence that the study would provide a better understanding of the Omani market and its potential opportunities for Indian exporters and investors.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Narang noted, “India’s agricultural exports are rapidly expanding, making the country an important contributor to the global food basket and showcasing the tremendous potential to enhance India-Oman trade relations.”
