Jaskirat Kaur, a 33-year-old woman of Indian origin, has been found guilty of manslaughter for the death of her 10-year-old daughter, Shay Kang, at their home in Rowley Regis, West Midlands, England, in March. Kaur, also known as Jasmine Kang, admitted to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility during a hearing at Wolverhampton Crown Court and is set to be sentenced on October 25.

During the brief hearing, Kaur appeared via video link and confirmed her name. She denied the charge of murder but accepted the manslaughter charge, which was deemed acceptable by the prosecution.

  • In response to the tragedy, parents of Shay’s schoolmates launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of her funeral

  • The campaign page reflected the community’s grief, stating, “She didn’t deserve this at all, and the best we can do is make sure she flies high in the most beautiful way

According to Sally Howes KC, the prosecution counsel, the Crown agreed to the plea of manslaughter. Katherine Goddard, Kaur’s defense lawyer, stated that there was “no dispute over the facts” of the case, reinforcing the acceptance of the manslaughter plea.

The tragic incident occurred on March 4, when Shay Kang was found dead at the family’s home. A postmortem examination revealed that Shay died from stab wounds to her chest. This finding was confirmed during an inquest held at the Black Country Coroner’s Court. The local community was deeply affected by Shay’s death, and her school, Brickhouse Primary School, described her as a “bright, happy, fun-loving child” who would be greatly missed by all.
