US breaks record with student visas for India in 2024 for fourth consecutive year

In a remarkable achievement, the United States has once again issued a record number of student visas to Indian applicants in 2024, marking the fourth consecutive year of surpassing previous figures. While the exact number of visas issued is yet to be confirmed, it has already exceeded the 1.4 lakh student visas granted in 2023. This makes India the largest source of international students for US educational institutions, timesofindia.indiatimes.com reported.

The US Embassy in India has not only continued to prioritize student visas but has also introduced 250,000 additional visa appointments for various categories, including tourists, skilled workers, and students.

  • Chennai now ranked among the top four student visa processing locations globally, Indian students have emerged as the largest group of international graduate students in the United States
  • They represent over 25% of the more than one million foreign students currently pursuing education in the US

These new slots are expected to streamline the visa process for Indian applicants, ensuring timely interviews and smoother travel arrangements. The embassy revealed that it has processed over 10 lakh non-immigrant visa applications for the second consecutive year, demonstrating the growing demand for travel to the US from India.

US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, emphasized the strong collaboration between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden to expedite the visa process. “Our consular teams across India have worked diligently to meet the increasing demand. We have honored the commitment made by both nations to facilitate easier travel for Indian citizens,” Garcetti stated.
