Canada has retrenched several Indian staff members from its diplomatic missions across India due to the reduced number of Canadian personnel needed to manage operations effectively. This staff reduction follows India’s expulsion of 41 Canadian diplomats last year, aimed at achieving parity in diplomatic presence between the two nations. In response, Canada closed its in-person services at its consulates in Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Bengaluru, as reported by Times of India.
Although the exact number of retrenched staff members remains undisclosed, sources confirm that it does not exceed 100. A spokesperson from the Canadian High Commission expressed deep regret over the layoffs, attributing them to the departure of Canadian diplomats.

The staff reductions came as a surprise to Indian officials, who did not expect Canada to scale back services at its consulates. India’s earlier decision to expel Canadian diplomats was primarily focused on ensuring parity in diplomatic representation at the high commissions in New Delhi and Ottawa.
This diplomatic row escalated after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian government officials of being involved in the assassination of Khalistan leader Hardeep Nijjar in Vancouver. In response, India condemned Canadian diplomats for interfering in its internal matters.
