India seeks extradition of Bishnoi gang members from Canada amid diplomatic tensions

As the diplomatic standoff continues, India remains focused on securing the extradition of wanted criminals, including members of the Bishnoi gang, to strengthen its case for justice and address ongoing security concerns

India has sought the extradition of members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang from Canada, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), siasat.com reported. The MEA spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, revealed on October 17 that despite India’s efforts, Canada has been reluctant to hand over individuals linked to the gang, which is notorious for its involvement in crimes across both countries.

Jaiswal expressed surprise at the situation, noting that the individuals India requested for deportation are now being accused of criminal activities by Canadian authorities. He remarked on the irony of Canada holding India accountable for these crimes while also withholding extradition. The MEA also highlighted that 26 extradition requests remain pending with the Canadian government.

  • During a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 summit in Delhi, Trudeau said he expressed concerns over Nijjar’s killing
  • In response, Modi reiterated India’s frustration over the presence of individuals in Canada who openly oppose the Indian government and engage in activities India considers illegal
  • Trudeau defended the Canadian stance, citing the country’s commitment to free speech, even when it involves criticism of foreign governments

The statement comes in the midst of growing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently admitted that while he accused Indian agents of involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, he had no concrete evidence to support the claim. Trudeau’s accusation, which has strained relations between the two countries, was based solely on intelligence reports.
