Indian Overseas Congress rallies NRI voters for Punjab by-elections

Both coordinators have developed briefs on key NRI issues, particularly regarding property and domestic disputes, and expressed frustration over the Punjab NRI Ministry’s inaccessibility

The Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) has intensified its outreach to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) for the upcoming by-elections in Punjab’s Dera Baba Nanak and Barnala constituencies, scheduled for November 13, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

Recognizing the substantial influence NRIs and their families can exert on these elections, the IOC appointed dedicated coordinators to spearhead campaign efforts and mobilize NRI support.

Arathi Krishna, the Incharge Secretary of the IOC and the Foreign Affairs Department of the All India Congress Committee, announced the appointments of Jagtar Singh Bittu and Sukhchain Singh Thikriwala as coordinators for Dera Baba Nanak and Barnala, respectively. She directed them to oversee campaign logistics for Congress supporters and IOC members arriving from abroad. The IOC expects to appoint coordinators for two additional constituencies shortly.

They allege that the lack of accessibility from ministry officials hinders efforts to resolve NRI grievances effectively

The role of NRIs in elections has grown significantly. With their affluence and close ties to family and friends in India, they often wield notable influence on voter opinions and choices. Their support not only bolsters candidate visibility but also provides essential financial backing for campaigns.

Jagtar Singh Bittu, who is based in France, has already initiated a global social media campaign targeting NRI groups, focusing on the achievements of Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, the three-time Dera Baba Nanak representative, whose wife, Jatinder Kaur Randhawa, is now running for the seat. Bittu emphasized that Randhawa, now a Member of Parliament, can represent NRI concerns directly in Parliament.

In Italy, Sukhchain Singh Thikriwala echoed this proactive approach, stating, “We will ensure a decisive victory for our Congress candidate. I will be on the ground in the constituency, connecting with voters, particularly NRIs and their families, to encourage their support for a candidate who truly addresses their concerns.”
