According to Nahid, no previous government has worked as comprehensively with minority communities as the current administration
Bangladesh’s interim government firmly asserts its commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of minority communities within its borders. In a candid interview with BBC Hindi, Nahid Islam, adviser for the information ministry, emphasized that protecting minorities is Bangladesh’s internal responsibility, and external commentary, particularly from India, is unwarranted, thedailystar.netreported.
“The minorities in Bangladesh are our citizens, and it is our responsibility to ensure their safety. India doesn’t have to comment on this. Instead, India should address the mass killings that occurred in July and August within its own borders,” Nahid stated.
When questioned about India’s repeated emphasis on the protection of Bangladeshi minorities, Nahid redirected the focus to mutual cooperation. “The discussion should center on how India can support Bangladesh in overcoming its challenges. Constructive dialogue should replace baseless accusations.”
Nahid also criticized Indian media for disseminating false information about the Bangladeshi government. “India should address the misinformation being spread by its media. We aim for fact-based discussions that foster better bilateral relations,” he remarked.
“Past governments exploited these issues for political gain, undermining the trust of minorities. We are working to change that narrative.”

He went further to highlight India’s lack of acknowledgment regarding the violence linked to the Awami League in July and August. “India has yet to clarify its stance on these events. While several countries have shown support for the people of Bangladesh, India has remained silent. Furthermore, it has offered refuge to individuals responsible for these acts of violence,” he alleged.
Nahid urged India to stand by Bangladesh in seeking justice. “If India genuinely sympathizes with the victims, we would appreciate its support in ensuring that the perpetrators face legal consequences,” he said.
Reflecting on the steps taken to protect minorities, Nahid acknowledged the challenges but pointed to tangible progress. “Without our government’s timely action, the situation could have been far worse. For instance, during Durga Puja, we received warnings of potential violence. We responded by deploying sufficient law enforcement, ensuring peaceful celebrations. Our administration has engaged closely with minority communities, rebuilding their trust,” he affirmed.
Addressing concerns about the rise of extremist groups in Bangladesh, Nahid dismissed such claims as politically motivated. “Bangladeshis overwhelmingly support democracy. The suggestion that extremism thrives without the Awami League is a narrative crafted by the party itself. The Awami League has been in power for many years, often with India’s support. However, bilateral relations should not be contingent on which party governs Bangladesh,” he argued.
Nahid emphasized that India’s relationship with Bangladesh must be built on mutual respect for sovereignty and not dictated by internal politics. “We don’t question whether the BJP or Congress governs India. Similarly, India should respect our political landscape without bias,” he concluded.
