Indian-origin tech visionary Sriram Krishnan, recently appointed as Senior Policy Advisor for Artificial Intelligencein Donald Trump’s incoming administration, was ahead of his time during his college years, according to his professor, Dr G Vadivu, at the SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), reported ndtv.com.
Dr Vadivu, who heads the department of science and big data at SRMIST in Chennai, described Krishnan as an exceptionally self-motivated student who demonstrated a passion for emerging technologies long before AI became mainstream.
Krishnan’s early interest in AI and programming languages such as Python left a lasting impression on his professors
“He was very interested in learning new things on his own,” Dr Vadivu said in an interview with NDTV. “He learned the Python programming language by himself and shared his newfound knowledge with faculty members, including me. These languages are crucial for fields like artificial intelligence and data science.”
At the time, the concept of AI was not widely discussed, but Krishnan was already immersed in parallel programmingand distributed computing, exploring the potential of Python to solve complex problems. “He was ahead of us,” Dr Vadivu added. “While AI was not a common focus for us, he was already on that path, and we are happy to see him pursue it professionally.”
Dr Vadivu recalled that after completing his undergraduate studies at SRMIST, Krishnan’s exceptional skills were quickly noticed by top tech companies, leading to his direct recruitment by Microsoft.
Krishnan’s career trajectory has since taken him to top companies, including Microsoft, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter)
- After his tenure at Microsoft, Krishnan went on to work at Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), under tech mogul Elon Musk
- His groundbreaking work in AI and technology has since earned him recognition at the highest levels, culminating in his recent appointment to the Trump administration
- Dr Vadivu noted that Krishnan’s continuous success is a testament to his innovative mindset, which was evident even during his early academic years
Krishnan’s connection with SRMIST remains strong, with the alumnus frequently returning to inspire future students
Despite his rapid rise in the tech world, Krishnan has always stayed connected to his roots. “He never forgot his alma mater,” Dr Vadivu remarked. “He visited the campus several times, met faculty, and delivered seminars for our current students.” Krishnan’s willingness to mentor and engage with younger generations reflects his commitment to giving back to the institution that helped shape his career.
