Professor Ajay Rane, a distinguished figure in community service and women’s health advocacy, has been honoured with the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) for 2025.
The PBSA, the highest accolade conferred upon overseas Indians, celebrates outstanding achievements and contributions across various fields.
This recognition underscores Professor Rane’s transformative impact in Australia and his unwavering commitment to fostering equality and well-being.
The award was presented during the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, held from January 8–10, 2025.
President of India, Droupadi Murmu conferred the accolade at the event’s Valedictory Session, symbolising the enduring bond between India and its global diaspora.
A Global Advocate

- By demonstrating minimally invasive surgeries worldwide, he has not only enhanced clinical practices but also empowered medical professionals globally.
- Remarkably, 97% of his surgeries are performed as ambulatory day-case procedures, setting a benchmark for efficiency and patient recovery.
Championing Women’s Health and Social Equity
A globally renowned urogynaecologist, Professor Rane is the Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at James Cook University School of Medicine in Townsville, Australia.
Additionally, he serves as a Visiting Medical Officer at the Mater Hospital Townsville and Director of Urogynaecology at the Townsville Hospital. His expertise lies in minimally invasive surgeries addressing urinary incontinence, genital prolapse, and fistulas, including his innovative operation, Perigee, designed for bladder prolapse repair.
Professor Rane’s commitment extends beyond clinical practice to groundbreaking research. His interests include developing slings for incontinence, exploring advanced meshes for prolapse repair, and analysing human postures during micturition and bowel movements.
His research unit, comprising fellows from Australia and developing nations, includes multidisciplinary teams of nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians, and physiologists, fostering a holistic approach to women’s health.
Recognition of Excellence
The PBSA selection process, led by a Jury-cum-Awards Committee chaired by India’s Vice-President and including the External Affairs Minister, reflects the award’s prestige.
This year’s recipients, representing diverse fields such as business, education, medical science, and public affairs, highlight the extensive contributions of the Indian diaspora. Among them, Professor Rane’s grassroots impact in Australia stands out for improving lives and fostering a sense of belonging among marginalized groups.
