NRI group raises concern over rising pollution in two villages in Sundargarh

US-Based Floriya Association Urges Action Over Environmental Hazards in Barobhagar and Alupada

A US-based organisation representing Odia NRIs has raised alarms over the escalating pollution levels in Barobhagar and Alupada villages, which are being impacted by NTPC’s Darlipali project. The Floriya Association, representing NRIs from Florida and other US regions, highlighted the alarming rise in pollution and urged the Sundargarh district collector to address the issue, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

“NTPC’s Proximity to Villages Causes Environmental and Health Hazards”

The Floriya Association claims that the thermal power plant, located just 200 metres from the villages, has caused significant radiation and pollution.

The group also expressed concerns over a nearby 400-acre fly ash pond, which has led to accidents, crop damage, and health issues. They allege that NTPC proceeded with land acquisition without conducting proper environmental impact assessments and economic surveys.

Government Response and Protests Highlight the Urgency of the Issue

Sundargarh sub-collector Dasarathi Sarabu announced that senior NTPC officials would soon assess the situation. Following protests by villagers and displaced persons on January 6, the demand for acquiring the remaining 40 hectares of affected land gained further attention. The Floriya Association has also forwarded its concerns to national and local authorities, including the Prime Minister’s Office and human rights organisations.
