As it continues its mission, the organization remains a beacon of community service and cultural advocacy, inspiring others to contribute meaningfully to the global Indian diaspora
The Hindustani Samaj, Russia’s oldest Indian socio-cultural organization, has been awarded the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) for 2025 in recognition of its transformative contributions to community service. The PBSA, the highest honor bestowed upon overseas Indians by the Government of India, celebrates exceptional achievements across various fields. This year’s accolade underscores Hindustani Samaj’s unwavering dedication to fostering equality, cultural preservation, and well-being.
The award ceremony took place during the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention, held from January 8 to 10, 2025, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, conferred the award during the Valedictory Session, highlighting the enduring bond between India and its global diaspora.
A Legacy of Cultural Promotion
Established in 1957, Hindustani Samaj was founded by literary stalwarts Bhishma Sahni and Madan Lal Madhu during a pivotal period in Indo-Russian relations. The organization has played a crucial role in promoting Indian culture, heritage, and values while supporting the Indian diaspora in Russia. Through its signature “Unity in Diversity” cultural programs, Hindustani Samaj showcases India’s rich traditions, fostering greater understanding and appreciation between Indian and Russian communities. Its translation literary contests have also been instrumental in making Indian literature accessible to Russian audiences.
Collaborative Initiatives

Hindustani Samaj’s contributions extend beyond cultural promotion
-
The organization collaborates closely with the Indian Embassy in Moscow and other Indian organizations, including the Bhartiya Sanskritik Samaj, Brahma Kumaris, ISKCON, Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, and Ramakrishna Society Vedanta Centre

The organization’s collaboration with the Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre has further strengthened its ability to bring the Indian community together. By organizing social and cultural events, Hindustani Samaj continues to provide opportunities for fostering a sense of belonging among Indians in Russia.
Serving the Indian Diaspora
With an estimated Indian population of 14,000, primarily concentrated in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Hindustani Samaj serves as a vital support network. It addresses the evolving needs of the diaspora while staying true to its core mission of cultural preservation and community welfare. By facilitating cultural exchanges and community initiatives, the organization has created a robust framework that supports mutual understanding and collaboration.
