Viatina-19, a Nelore breed cow, becomes the most expensive cow ever sold
A Nelore breed cow named Viatina-19 set a Guinness World Record after fetching ₹40 crore at an auction in Minas Gerais, Brazil, reported multiple media outlets. The cow’s record-breaking sale has drawn global attention due to its exceptional genetic traits and muscular build, reported livemint.com.
Exceptional Weight and Record-Breaking Auction
According to reports, Viatina-19 weighed 1,101 kilograms, twice the average weight of other cows of the same breed.
This unprecedented sale has made Viatina-19 the most expensive cow ever sold at auction, setting a new benchmark in the cattle industry.
Unique Traits of Viatina-19
Apart from its massive weight, Viatina-19 has gained worldwide recognition due to its outstanding genetics, exceptional muscle structure, and high heat tolerance.
The cow also won the prestigious title of “Miss South America” at the Champions of the World competition, further solidifying its elite status in the cattle breeding industry.
Nelore Breed and Indian Connection
The Nelore breed of cattle is recognized for its distinctive “hump” on the back. Although the breed does not originate from India, it has Indian roots due to the significant contribution of the Indian Ongole breed in the creation of Nelore.
Historical records from Oklahoma State University highlight that the name Nelore was used synonymously with Ongole in Brazil, where the breed was developed
The Indian Ongole breed has a history dating back 2,000 years before the Christian era, initially brought to prominence by the Aryan people. Over time, selective breeding led to the evolution of Nelore cattle, which are now widely bred in Brazil.
Global Demand and Expansion
Viatina-19’s embryos are in high demand worldwide for breeding programs, primarily due to the breed’s remarkable heat tolerance and disease resistance in tropical and subtropical climates. Brazil has emerged as the largest breeder of Nelore cattle, with exports to Argentina, Paraguay, Venezuela, Central America, Mexico, the United States, and several other countries.
These cattle are known for their efficiency in grazing and their ability to thrive in challenging environments while maintaining robust body conditions. As per multiple media reports, Nelore cattle continue to be one of the most sought-after breeds in the global cattle industry.
