Jharkhand workers unpaid for three months, face severe food crisis in UAE; social worker urges urgent intervention
A group of 15 migrant labourers from Jharkhand, including two from Bedam panchayat in Hazaribag’s Tatijharia block, have made a desperate appeal to the Indian government for help after being stranded in Dubai without pay. In a video message circulating on social media on Wednesday, the stranded workers pleaded with the Union and state governments to take immediate steps to arrange their return to India. The labourers claimed they are living in dire conditions, surviving without wages and facing an acute food shortage.
Social worker Sikandar Ali has also stepped forward to amplify their plea, urging both the Centre and the Jharkhand government to act swiftly for the safe repatriation of the workers.
This is not an isolated case. In another troubling development, five labourers from Bagodar in Giridih district were reportedly kidnapped in Niger, West Africa nearly two months ago and are still unaccounted for. Additionally, the bodies of two migrant workers from Jobar panchayat in Bishnugarh, who died abroad—one in Saudi Arabia and another in Kuwait—are yet to be repatriated.
The spate of overseas labour issues has renewed calls for stronger safeguards and monitoring mechanisms to protect migrant Indian workers abroad, especially from economically vulnerable regions like Jharkhand.
