Indian Navy showcases prompt maritime security action in Gulf of Oman as fire breaks out onboard tanker MT Yi Cheng 6
A major maritime emergency unfolded when MT Yi Cheng 6, a tanker en route from Kandla, India to Shinas, Oman, caught fire in its engine room, resulting in a complete power failure. All 14 crew members onboard were of Indian origin.
The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Tabar, deployed in the Gulf of Oman for ongoing maritime security operations, swiftly responded to the vessel’s distress call on June 29, 2025, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
“The Pulau-flagged vessel reported a significant fire onboard,” said the Navy’s official spokesperson. “INS Tabar transferred its firefighting team and equipment onto the stricken ship using both a helicopter and a boat.”

A total of 13 Indian naval personnel, along with 5 crew members of the tanker, engaged in firefighting operations. The Indian Navy reported that the intensity of the fire was drastically reduced due to coordinated efforts.
