Radika Rajavarma, a repeat drug offender, offered SGD 1,000 to officers to let her smoke a cigarette while in custody
An Indian-origin Singaporean woman has been sentenced to more than five years in jail after being found guilty of multiple offences, including drug consumption and attempting to bribe police officers, reported ndtv.com.
According to The Straits Times, Radika has a long history of drug-related offences dating back to 2018. She was previously sentenced in 2020 to three and a half years for methamphetamine consumption and was placed under a five-year remission order after her release on bail in June 2022.
Radika Rajavarma, 42, pleaded guilty to offering SGD 1,000 to officers in exchange for being allowed to smoke a cigarette while under custody in 2022
However, on July 29, 2023, she was arrested again for consuming drugs. Traces of methamphetamine were found in her urine samples. Though released on bail shortly after being charged, she repeatedly failed to attend mandatory urine tests and skipped her court appearances, leading to her re-arrest in October 2022.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Emily Koh told the court that Radika had been allowed a few cigarettes after her arrest. As the police vehicle neared its destination, she asked for one last cigarette. When denied, she offered the officers a bribe of SGD 1,000, which they rejected.
A Singapore court sentenced her to five years, eight months, and four weeks in prison, with an additional 256 days added for breaching her remission order.
