Bihari’s ‘samosa stall is London’s newest sensation

  • 37 million views on Instagram

  • Just saying “I’m a foodie” is hardly sufficient to convey the full import of what really lies beyond those three words

  • It’s only when you complete the sentence and say “I’m a foodie from Lucknow” does the richness and splendour of Awadhi cuisine begin to tickle your taste buds, even if it is initially only imagined

Whether it’s sampling street food on the trot like ‘puri-bhaaji’ or ‘Chaat’ or a comfortable five-course meal in a restaurant or hotel, enjoyed with laidback, Nawabi ease and leisure, few can match the taste, magnificence and variety of Lakhnavi cuisine.

But in spite of all the mind-boggling, lip-smacking choices that abound, my favourite food item is the samosa.

I don’t know exactly why, but whenever the hunger pangs take hold of me, the first thing that comes to my mind is a samosa, it’s a inexplicable, compulsive urge.

For me it seems like the perfect snack, and oh so neatly packaged in its own triangular, golden-brown casing, so crispy and full of crunch. And inside the most delicious delight, a soft mix of potatoes and peas, mildly flavoured with some ‘masala’ or spices.

During my schooldays in Lucknow in the 1970s, you could buy 10 samosas for just one Rupee. Nowadays a samosa costs Rs 15 and it doesn’t taste half as good. But times change and that’s life

But now our focus must shift to a Bihari gentleman who is making waves selling samosas as a street snack in London.

The video shows how he prepares the samosas hygienically and how customers — both Indians and locals in London — enjoy them. The video was captioned, “Best Samosa in London,” and also mentioned the shop’s location.

This particular video has already amassed over 20 lakh likes, more than 5,000 comments, and over 37 million views The man has truly become a social media sensation.

London mein khade hoke Bihar ka naam aur samose ka asli swad zinda rakh rahe ho. Truly inspiring. Jab tak aap jaise log hain, Bihar will always shine globally.”
