A growing number of families in Haryana are exploring matrimonial alliances abroad, but experts caution that international marriages require strong safeguards, legal awareness and transparent communication, the Tribune India reported.

These concerns were the focus of a recent awareness programme on NRI marriages, jointly organised by the National Commission for Women, Dr BR Ambedkar National Law University (DBRANLU), Sonepat, and the Law Department of Chaudhary Devi Lal University (CDLU), Sirsa.

Held at the CV Raman Bhawan Seminar Hall, the session aimed to familiarise students, parents and community members with the legal, social and practical complexities involved in cross-border marriages.

Senior administrators, including CDLU Vice-Chancellor Vijay Kumar and DBRANLU Vice-Chancellor Devinder Singh, emphasised that challenges in NRI marriages often extend beyond individual disputes and can quickly escalate into major legal and social conflicts.

They noted that women are particularly vulnerable when stranded abroad or caught in fraudulent situations, especially when distance, unfamiliar procedures and language barriers delay their access to justice. According to the experts, early legal consultation, careful verification of facts and a transparent exchange of information between families are essential steps before finalising such alliances.

Highlighting common lapses, speakers stressed that many families proceed based on assumptions or attraction to the idea of settling overseas, skipping basic verification of documents, employment claims or immigration status. This lack of due diligence has led to a rise in cases involving abandonment, deception and prolonged legal battles. The session urged prospective brides, grooms and their families to insist on authenticated paperwork, clarity on marital rights in the foreign country and awareness of available support systems.

Faculty experts from DBRANLU, including Assistant Professors Parul Vashisht, Prakhar Sahu and Akash Sharma, elaborated on dispute trends, fraud indicators, complaint mechanisms and preventive strategies.

Experts underlined the need for informed consent and proper legal documentation to reduce the risk of exploitation

Representatives from the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) also participated, noting that free legal aid and counselling are available to victims confronting NRI-related grievances. Advocate Gurtej Singh added perspectives from legal practice and recent case experiences.

The event was moderated by Dr Jyotsna Chaudhary, with Dr Anil Ghanghas welcoming attendees. Senior faculty member Professor Mukesh Garg noted that under the leadership of the CDLU Vice-Chancellor, the Law Department consistently conducts such programmes to build legal awareness and prepare students to engage with emerging societal issues. The workshop reinforced that informed decision-making remains the most effective safeguard in NRI marriages, ensuring safety, dignity and legal protection for all parties involved.
