Together, these measures reinforce the Central Bank of India’s commitment to “Ease of Banking” for customers across the globe
The Central Bank of India has taken another significant step toward enhancing its engagement with the Indian diaspora by inaugurating a dedicated NRI Desk at its Kolkata Zonal Office. The new facility, launched on December 26, 2025, reflects the bank’s growing focus on providing customized and efficient banking solutions to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), particularly across eastern India.
The inauguration was led by Shri Raj Kokil, Deputy General Manager of the Kolkata Zone, and was attended by senior officials of the bank along with members of the NRI community. The initiative underscores the institution’s strategy to deepen trust and accessibility for overseas Indians who maintain strong financial and emotional ties with the country.
- Designed as a single-window service platform, the NRI Desk aims to simplify and centralize banking requirements that are often complex due to cross-border regulations and compliance norms
- By bringing specialized services under one roof, the bank intends to reduce turnaround time and improve the overall customer experience for its international clientele
Among the core offerings of the new desk are faster processing and management of NRE, NRO, and FCNR accounts, enabling NRIs to handle their Indian finances with greater ease. The desk will also provide focused investment advisory services, guiding customers on opportunities in Indian financial markets, including mutual funds and government-backed instruments that are suitable for overseas investors. In addition, remittance and repatriation services have been streamlined to ensure quicker fund transfers and competitive exchange rates.
Regulatory support forms another key pillar of the initiative. Dedicated assistance will be available for compliance-related requirements such as FATCA and CRS documentation, as well as for understanding benefits under Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements. This specialized guidance is expected to help NRIs navigate regulatory obligations more confidently.
Speaking at the launch, Shri Raj Kokil highlighted the importance of the NRI community in India’s economic journey. He noted that the Kolkata NRI Desk is intended to deliver personalized guidance supported by seamless digital solutions, ensuring that distance is no longer a barrier to effective banking.
