South Africa is stepping up efforts to attract 100,000 Indian travellers in 2026, banking on easier visa rules, improved flight links and a growing interest in long-haul holidays.

In 2025, the country welcomed 69,680 visitors from India — an improvement from the pandemic years but still below the pre-Covid level of 100,000. Tourism officials now aim to return to that milestone next year as Indian outbound travel continues to grow steadily.

  • A key part of the strategy is the introduction of a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system

  • The updated process has simplified applications and reduced visa processing time to just 48 hours, making South Africa a more convenient choice for Indian tourists planning overseas trips

Beyond visas, South Africa is promoting itself as a destination for meaningful and immersive travel rather than short breaks. From thrilling wildlife safaris in the iconic Kruger National Park to scenic vineyard stays in Stellenbosch, the country offers diverse experiences that appeal to families, honeymooners and adventure seekers alike.

Travellers can also explore the vibrant city life of Cape Town, take coastal drives along the famous Garden Route, or discover heritage landmarks in Johannesburg. Tourism authorities believe these varied attractions match the evolving preferences of Indian travellers, who are increasingly seeking culture, nature and unique local experiences.

Recent tourism roadshows held in major Indian cities have also focused on strengthening cultural ties and building partnerships with travel operators. Officials say improved air connectivity between India and South Africa will further support growth.
