Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has said that Indian migration to the United Kingdom would be subject to stricter limits if his party forms a government after the next general election, but stressed that highly skilled Indian professionals would continue to be welcomed.

Speaking in an interview with CNN-News18, Farage said his proposed immigration policy would focus on reducing overall migration while ensuring Britain remains open to individuals with specialist skills who can contribute to the country’s economy.

Farage said the proposed restrictions would apply to all nationalities rather than targeting India specifically. He added that priority would be given to professionals in sectors such as technology, engineering, healthcare and other high-value industries, where skilled workers are needed to support economic growth.

He also praised the contribution of the Indian-origin community in Britain, describing it as one of the country’s most successful immigrant groups. According to Farage, Indian professionals have built a strong reputation through their work ethic and achievements across business, medicine, science and technology.

  • Farage said Britain should continue to operate a selective immigration system that attracts talent while ensuring migration remains at sustainable levels

  • He indicated that temporary work permits for skilled workers could continue under such a framework, although overall migration numbers would be lower than at present

The remarks come as immigration remains a major political issue in the UK, with both the governing Labour Party and opposition parties advocating measures to reduce net migration while maintaining access to highly skilled international talent. The debate is expected to remain central ahead of the next UK general election.

Farage also reiterated his support for stronger economic ties between India and the UK, saying the two countries should continue expanding trade and investment despite differences over immigration policy.
