The Government of India has appointed senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Anjani Kumar as the country’s next Ambassador to Ukraine, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday.

A 2003-batch IFS officer, Kumar is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. According to the MEA, he is expected to take up his assignment in Kyiv shortly.

His appointment comes as Ukraine continues to face the prolonged conflict with Russia. Despite the challenging security situation, India has maintained diplomatic engagement with both Ukraine and Russia, while consistently advocating dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. New Delhi has also provided humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and extended support to Indian nationals affected by the war.

As India’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Kumar will lead the Indian mission in Kyiv and oversee efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas including politics, trade, investment, education, science, culture and people-to-people exchanges. He will also supervise consular services for Indian citizens and promote collaboration in sectors of mutual interest.

  • Ukraine remains an important partner for India in Eastern Europe, with ties continuing through diplomatic exchanges, humanitarian initiatives and cooperation in multilateral forums despite the ongoing conflict

  • India has sought to maintain constructive relations with both Kyiv and Moscow while encouraging diplomatic efforts to restore peace

During his diplomatic career, Kumar has held several key assignments within the Ministry of External Affairs and at Indian missions abroad, gaining extensive experience in foreign policy and international relations.

The appointment forms part of the government’s regular diplomatic reshuffle aimed at strengthening India’s overseas missions and advancing its foreign policy objectives. Kumar is expected to assume charge of the Indian Embassy in Kyiv in the coming weeks.
