Promotion signals greater focus on artificial intelligence as Prime Minister Andy Burnham overhauls senior government team
British-Indian politician Kanishka Narayan has been promoted to the UK Cabinet as Minister for Artificial Intelligence following Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s first major ministerial reshuffle, marking a significant milestone for both the government’s technology agenda and British-Indian representation in Westminster.
Narayan, who was born in Bihar, India, and serves as the Labour MP for Vale of Glamorgan in Wales, becomes one of the most prominent Indian-origin figures in the new Cabinet. His elevation comes as Burnham reorganises key government departments and replaces several senior ministers associated with former Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The reshuffle places artificial intelligence at the centre of the new administration’s economic and industrial strategy. Burnham has merged the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology into a newly created Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, while ensuring AI retains Cabinet-level representation through Narayan’s appointment.
Responding to his promotion, Narayan said the Cabinet role reflected the government’s determination to harness the opportunities presented by AI while addressing its challenges, including the impact of emerging technologies on jobs and public services
Industry leaders have broadly welcomed the move, describing the Cabinet-level AI portfolio as a positive signal that the UK intends to remain competitive in the global race to develop and deploy artificial intelligence. However, some technology experts have expressed concern that the wider departmental restructuring could temporarily slow policy implementation and innovation programmes.
The wider reshuffle has seen several ministers loyal to Starmer removed or reassigned, with Burnham seeking to stamp his authority on the Labour government after taking office.
