Indian-American Lawmakers Call for Greater Political Participation to Counter Anti-India Hate

Congressmen Shri Thanedar and Raja Krishnamoorthi urge the diaspora to engage in public life and challenge growing anti-India and anti-immigrant rhetoric

Indian-American members of the US Congress have called on the Indian-American community to play a more active role in politics, saying stronger civic participation is essential to counter rising anti-India and anti-immigrant sentiment in the United States.

Speaking at a community event, Congressmen Shri Thanedar and Raja Krishnamoorthi said Indian-Americans should consider contesting elections at local, state and federal levels to ensure the community has a stronger voice in policymaking and public discourse.

  • The lawmakers stressed that the Indian-American community has made significant contributions to the United States across business, healthcare, technology, education and public service

  • They said these achievements should be matched by greater political representation, particularly at a time when incidents of anti-India and anti-immigrant rhetoric have become more visible in parts of the country

Declaring that “we are here to stay”, the lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to opposing discrimination and promoting an inclusive society. They encouraged community members, particularly younger generations, to engage with the democratic process by voting, participating in public affairs and seeking elected office.

Their remarks come amid broader discussions in the United States about hate speech, racial discrimination and civic participation among minority communities. Advocacy groups have also been encouraging greater political engagement within Asian-American communities ahead of upcoming elections, arguing that increased representation can help address issues affecting immigrant populations.

The appeal reflects the growing political influence of Indian-Americans, who continue to gain prominence in public office while playing an increasingly important role in shaping US domestic policy and strengthening India-US relations.
