New counselling reforms aim to reduce paperwork, minimise travel and make the medical admissions process more transparent

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has introduced a series of reforms to the NEET UG 2026 counselling process, allowing candidates to complete several key admission procedures online in a move designed to make medical admissions more efficient and student-friendly.
Under the revised system, candidates seeking an upgrade to a better seat in subsequent rounds of counselling will no longer be required to report physically to their allotted medical college before participating in the next round. Instead, the entire seat upgradation process will be managed online, reducing unnecessary travel and administrative delays.

The MCC has also digitised the seat resignation process. Students wishing to surrender an allotted seat can now complete the procedure through the official counselling portal rather than visiting the institution in person

The change is expected to simplify admissions for candidates who decide to pursue alternative options or secure a higher-preference seat in later counselling rounds
Another major reform concerns applicants seeking admission under the NRI quota. Candidates can now upload and verify the required supporting documents online, replacing the earlier process that often involved physical submission and verification. The measure is expected to benefit overseas applicants and reduce delays in document processing.
To support the rollout of the revised system, the MCC has conducted training sessions for state counselling authorities and participating medical colleges. Institutions have also been directed to provide clear and updated information on seat availability and fee structures to help candidates make informed choices during counselling.
The reforms form part of the Centre’s broader effort to modernise the NEET UG counselling process through greater digitalisation, transparency and ease of access. The 2026 counselling schedule is expected to begin in early August, with the detailed timetable to be announced on the MCC’s official portal.
